Ashwin was born on September 17, 1986, into a Tamil Brahmin family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He lives in West Mambalam, Chennai. Ravichandran’s father played club cricket as a fast bowler. Ashwin attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School for his schooling. He also attended SSN College of Engineering, where he earned a B-Tech in information technology. Given that St. Bede’s had a cricket academy, his time there was extremely significant.
Ashwin commenced his cricket journey as an opening batsman and a medium-pace bowler. With his 6 feet 2 inch height in mind, CK Vijay, his childhood coach, assisted him in making the switch to an off-spinner.
