Buttler, who has been in scintillating form for the Titans, was initially expected to be available for the full season. However, a scheduling shift in the IPL has now created a clash with England’s international commitments.
Originally, the IPL 2025 final was scheduled for May 25, but a one-week delay has pushed it to June 3. This new timeline overlaps with England’s white-ball series against the West Indies, which kicks off on May 29.
Consequently, Buttler has been called up to represent England in both ODI and T20I squads, making his participation in the IPL playoffs highly unlikely.
Buttler’s absence will be a significant blow for Gujarat Titans, as the English opener has been one of the standout performers of the season. He has scored 500 runs at an impressive average of 71.43, establishing himself as arguably the best batter in IPL 2025 so far. However, with his international duties calling, the franchise has moved swiftly to seek a replacement.
Kusal Mendis, a dynamic right-handed batter from Sri Lanka, is tipped to fill the void. Mendis has been in good touch, recently featuring in the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Quetta Gladiators, where he scored 143 runs at a blistering strike rate of 168.23. Overall, he brings solid T20 credentials with 4,718 career runs at an average of 30.24 and a strike rate of 137.43.
Should Gujarat Titans confirm his signing, Mendis would likely slot straight into the playing XI as a wicketkeeper-batter, with Anuj Rawat being the only other gloveman in the squad. He would become the second Sri Lankan cricketer signed mid-season by GT, following Dasun Shanaka, who replaced the injured Glenn Phillips earlier in the tournament.
