The high-stakes match, or almost a quarterfinal, between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) is on the verge of getting washed out. IMD issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Monday for four days (May 19 to May 23). Therefore, the threat of rain hangs over the fate of the two teams in the run for the playoff qualifications.

The Mumbai Indians (MI), currently on 14 points, are in fourth position, while Delhi Capitals (DC), with 13 points in account, is just below MI in the points table. If rain washes away the match between MI and DC, then both teams will get one point each. In this case, MI will have 15, and DC remains at 14 points in the points table. Moreover, both teams’ last encounter of the season is with Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings (PBKS).

If the match gets washed out, Delhi Capitals (DC), with 14 points, will need to win against PBKS with a big margin. In addition, DC will expect PBKS to defeat MI in their last game to qualify for the playoffs. On the other hand, if rain spoils the game, MI, with 15 points, will directly reach the playoffs if they defeat PBKS. In either case, if MI loses to PBKS, they will expect PBKS to defeat DC, and MI will qualify for the playoffs with 15 points.

If No Rain, Possibilities For Playoff

The match could also happen, keeping in mind the new rule of the BCCI in case of rain interruptions. BCCI has extended the reserve time from one hour to two hours. Therefore, in this case, if MI wins, MI qualifies for the playoffs. In either case, if DC wins the match they will need to defeat PBKS also in their last game. Moreover, DC will need PBKS to defeat MI in their final league game.
