In a significant development ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League season, Axar Patel is reportedly set to be appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals, following KL Rahul’s decision to contribute solely as a player. KL Rahul, who was signed by DC for ₹14 crore in the previous mega auction, had been a potential captaincy candidate given his prior experience leading Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Under his leadership, LSG reached the playoffs in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. However, sources indicate that he will now be a key part of DC’s lineup without taking on the captaincy responsibilities.
Axar’s elevation comes on the back of his pivotal role in India’s triumphant 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign, where his all-round abilities were instrumental in securing the title.
His leadership credentials were on display during IPL 2024 when he stepped in as DC’s captain for a crucial match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the absence of Rishabh Pant, who was suspended due to an over-rate violation.
Axar’s recent experience as India’s vice-captain during their 4-1 T20I series victory over England adds further credibility to his growing leadership profile.
A key member of the Delhi Capitals squad since 2019, Axar was retained for ₹16.50 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Over the course of his 150-match IPL career, he has accumulated 1,653 runs at a strike rate of 130.88 while also proving his effectiveness with the ball, claiming 123 wickets at an economy rate of 7.28.
Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24 at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The team is scheduled for a short three-day preparatory camp in New Delhi before departing for Visakhapatnam on March 17.
