List of Who were the best captains of IPL 2025?
#10 MS Dhoni & Ruturaj Gaikwad
We start with MS Dhoni, arguably the greatest former captain to lead the Indian side. After Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured in the earlier part of the season. MS Dhoni was put in charge of leading the team for the rest of the season. Although the hopes were high from CSK fans, Chennai Super Kings finished the season at the bottom of the table. With his future unknown as a player and as their captain, CSK had a disappointing IPL season.
#9 Riyan Parag & Sanju Samson
Riyan Parag led Rajasthan Royals for a total of 8 matches over Sanju Samson who was injured for those matches, however Sanju Samson also led for 6 matches. This could have been the reason why the team performances were fluctuating all season long. They finished at the 9th spot, but with a player like Vaibhav Suryavanshi in their squad they will be aiming to comeback stronger in the next season.
#8 Rishabh Pant
Pant was the costliest buy in the IPL 2025 mega auction, signed by LSG aiming for the title, LSG had a strong start to their season. However, their performances had been a downfall as they went on with their season. Rishabh Pant was under performing the whole season as well. Rishabh Pant’s best performance came in the last match against RCB, but they lost that match as well. Nest season will be the one to look out for, for the Lucknow Super Giants
#7 Ajinkya Rahane
What most of them thought as a panic buy, Ajinkya Rahane went on to be a decent captain for Kolkata Knight Riders. Rahane who replaced the title winning captain Shreyas Iyer, who although failed to defend their title, gave some decent performances in the league. Finishing 8th in the points table, they will be aiming for a better finish next season.
#6 Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins, last year’s runner up and the Aussie World-cup winning captain, had an underwhelming IPL 2025 seaosn. SRH had the hopes high to cross the 300-run mark in IPL 2025. However, they had a hard time finding a place in the playoffs. Strong players’ performances were missing, and bowlers were underperforming. SRH now will look forward to the IPL 2026, and will be determined to prove themselves.
#5 Axar Patel
Axar Patel has been a strong leader for the Delhi Capitals, after Pant was let go, DC was in contention for a playoff spot. However, Delhi Capitals missed out on the playoff spot, shy of just one point. Axar Patel has surely been a breath of fresh air for the Delhi Franchise.
Hardik Pandya missed Mumbai Indians season opener, and after that match as well, Mumbai Indians were having an awful start to their season. However, MI had overturned their destiny midway through IPL 2025. They had gone on a 6-match winning streak and have been giving strong dominant performances. Although they lost in the Qualifier 2 they will surely aim for the 6th title next season.
#3 Shubman Gill
If we were to choose just two words to describe Shubman Gill captaincy for GT in IPL 2025, the words would be ‘Efficient’ and ‘Dominance’. Gujarat Titans were rolling strong performances both with the bat as well as with the bowl. Even though they failed in the final spot, their league performances have been staggering.
#2 Rajat Patidar
His first year as the captain in IPL 2025 has been a dream come true. RCB are back into the final after 9 years. Apart from that, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been one of the best overall balanced teams in IPL 2025. RCB ended their league phase without losing a single away match. Rajat Patidar alongside his leadership role, has been giving strong performances on the pitch when needed.
#1 Shreyas Iyer
The Title-defending captain, has been leading the charge with his new team Punjab Kings, from topping the league phase to clinching a place in the finals, last appearing in 2014. Shreyas Iyer brought a strong winning mentality along with him, which can be seen in the team. Punjab Kings have transitioned into a powerhouse when compared to their last few years performances. Which is why Shreyas Iyer deserves the credit as the best captain to lead in IPL 2025.
