As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season kicks off, all eyes are once again on MS Dhoni. The Chennai Super Kings legend is set to don the yellow jersey for yet another campaign, with his team opening against their biggest rivals, Mumbai Indians. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lauded Dhoni’s ability to make an impact at this stage of his career and expressed confidence in him delivering crucial performances this season. 

Despite turning 43, Dhoni remains a force to be reckoned with, silencing any retirement talks with a simple yet powerful statement—he can continue playing as long as he wants. 

“I can play for as long as I want for CSK. That’s my franchise. Even if I’m in a wheelchair, they’ll drag me,” said Dhoni in a chat on JioHotstar before the match against Mumbai Indians. 

As expected, Dhoni will likely bat lower down the order, in the No. 7 or No. 8 spot, similar to his role in recent years. But what truly stands out is his unconventional approach in the nets, something Gaikwad hinted at ahead of CSK’s opener. 

If longevity is a measure of greatness, Dhoni is in elite company. The IPL has seen veterans like Brad Hogg (45 years, 92 days) and Pravin Tambe (who played his final game at 44 years, 219 days), and Dhoni seems determined to carve his own path. 

Three years ago, when he stepped down as CSK’s captain, his retirement looked imminent. Last year, his sporadic appearances raised the same speculation. Yet, CSK ensured his presence for the 2025 season, retaining him in the squad as an uncapped player due to his five-year absence from international cricket. 

With 5,243 IPL runs under his belt, Dhoni ranks sixth on the all-time scoring charts, behind Virat Kohli at the top. His batting average of 39.12 surpasses that of both Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with only David Warner (40.52) and AB de Villiers (39.70) holding a higher average among those who have crossed 5,000 IPL runs. 

As another season unfolds, the question remains—how much longer will Dhoni keep going? If his latest remarks are anything to go by, the answer might just surprise everyone.
