94-Match Season By IPL 2028, No New Teams In Consideration
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans for a larger window of considering a 94-match season by IPL 2028. However, currently, there are no hints of the inclusion of two new teams in the play.
IPL From 74 To 94-Match Tournament
Since the introduction of two new franchises, Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), in 2022, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a 74-match season running from mid-March to May. Before 2022, IPL was a 60-match tournament with eight teams in competition. Previously, there were rumors surrounding scheduling an 84-match season in IPL 2025, but the plan got dropped due to international commitments.
However, now the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) is in talks of scheduling a 94-match tournament by 2028. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal talked about the serious consideration of the expansion of the number of matches from 74 to 94 by the 2028 season. In addition, he also said that the 94 games will have every team competing against every opponent franchise on the home ground and away. Most probably, the discussion surrounding the consideration of a 94-match IPL will be by next year, reviewing the fixed tour programs.
Furthermore, Arun Dhumal discussed no plans to introduce two new franchises to the league. According to the IPL Chairman, ten teams are good as of now. Talking of the IPL 2025 season’s growth, Arun Dhumal praised the youngsters taking center stage in the event and the competitiveness between teams. In addition, the IPL chairman also acknowledged IPL’s growth in terms of a hike in broadcasting numbers. He also talked about wishing to watch a new franchise lift the cup this year, describing DC, PBKS, and RCB’s game.
New Winner In IPL 2025
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is emerging as a season of new franchises in competitive spirits. DC, the runners-up of IPL 2020, have showcased their balanced side so far in the competition. In addition, Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS have exhibited their power-hitting ability in the season. Lastly, RCB has a different front-runner in every match. Therefore, one can expect a new franchise to lift the cup this year.
