What went wrong for India against England?

India’s campaign in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England is currenlty standing at a 2-1 series deficit, raising concerns about their Test cricket form under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching. Several critical factors contributed to their struggles, from performance related issues, to the injury crisis. What went wrong for India against England at India tour of England 2025?

Batting Collapses and Inconsistent Top Order

India’s batting line-up, despite individual brilliance from Shubman Gill (722 runs, avg. 90.25) and KL Rahul (511 runs, avg. 63.87), suffered from inconsistency. Key moments, like the third Test at Lord’s, saw India falter chasing 193, bowled out for 170 due to poor shot selection and Jofra Archer’s pace. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan scored half-centuries in the fourth Test but failed to convert starts into big scores, with India’s top order unable to counter England’s disciplined bowling, led by Ben Stokes’ rare five-wicket haul.

Dropped catches, such as Sudharsan’s on 20, compounded their woes. The absence of Indian legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin, who retired earlier, left the young squad exposed under pressure.

Bowling Struggles and Tactical Missteps

India’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah (14 wickets, avg. 26.00) and Mohammed Siraj (14 wickets, avg. 39.71), showed promise but lacked consistency. In the first Test at Leeds, England chased 371 comfortably, exposing India’s inability to defend totals.

The pitch conditions, offering swing and bounce, favored England’s seamers, while India’s pacers struggled to exploit them fully. Ravindra Jadeja’s spin (7 wickets) was underutilized on turning tracks, and tactical errors, like not taking the new ball promptly in the fourth Test, allowed England to build commanding totals.

Gautam Gambhir’s earlier clash with the Oval pitch curator highlighted frustrations over pitch preparation, which didn’t suit India’s spinners. These issues, combined with England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach, left India scrambling and unable to reclaim the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
