India’s Test rivalry with England dates back to 1932 when they played their inaugural Test at Lord’s. Since then, India has toured England 19 times for Test series. So Let’s take a look at Team India stats and records against England in Test.

However, victories have been rare. Out of those 19 series, England has won 14, India has won only 3 (in 1971, 1986, and 2007), and 2 have been drawn—including the thrilling 2-2 finish in 2021–22. 

England has traditionally been a challenging territory for Asian teams, with swing-friendly conditions exposing batting weaknesses and testing mental resilience.

Some of India’s heaviest defeats have come here, including the 5-0 whitewash in 1959 and the 4-0 loss in 2011. Although, the wins in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar, 1986 under Kapil Dev, and 2007 under Rahul Dravid stand as proud exceptions, showcasing India’s potential when the team clicks as a unit.

In total, India has won 11 of 68 Tests played in England, with England winning 36 and 21 ending in draws. However, the gap has narrowed in recent years. India has found more competitive footing since 2002, winning Tests at Lord’s (2014, 2021), Trent Bridge (2007, 2018), and The Oval (2021).  

The drawn 2021-22 series, played across two summers due to COVID-19, marked a turning point, with India leading 2-1 before losing the rescheduled final Test at Edgbaston. 

What to expect in the 2025 series 

The upcoming India tour of England 2025 presents both a challenge and an opportunity. With Shubman Gill set to lead a younger side following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, this will be a true test of India’s next generation.  

However, the presence of world-class bowler like Jasprit Bumrah and experience all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, along with rising batting talents, could make India a serious threat. 

The five-Test series, beginning June 20 at Headingley, offers a fresh shot at history. If India can combine consistency with their recent aggression, a first series win in England since 2007 is within reach.
