Shardul Out, Kuldeep In: India’s Bowling Reset to Counter England

India vs England Update: India vs England Edgbaston Test Bowling Changes

India has made major alterations to its bowling attack for the second Test against England in Edgbaston, to begin on July 2. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been given a break due to a planned workload management policy, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been excluded from the playing eleven based on disappointing performances. So let’s have a look at India vs England Edgbaston Test Bowling Changes.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir explained that Bumrah’s exclusion is not injury-related. It is part of India’s overarching plan to maintain Bumrah’s fitness and potency over the course of the five-test series.

Bumrah bowled well in the first Test at Headingley, taking a five-wicket haul in the first innings, but the management has decided to rotate him and restrict his workload so that he is kept renewed for the rest of the series.

Contrary to this, Shardul Thakur’s exclusion is performance-driven. After being picked as a seam-bowling all-rounder, Thakur couldn’t impress either with the ball or the bat in the opening Test. Cricket pundits like Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar criticized Thakur for his lack of performance, particularly given that he wasn’t used to the fullest in England’s dominating batting stint. His exclusion provides room for better performers both in pace and spin units.

To strengthen the bowling attack, India will be expected to introduce Kuldeep Yadav, whose left-arm wrist spin is regarded as a tactical boon at Edgbaston. With England’s top-order indicating vulnerability to spin in recent Tests, Kuldeep’s inclusion would provide a much-needed dimension to India’s attack. The likely pace trio would comprise Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Ravindra Jadeja, with Kuldeep likely to be the second spinner.

This balancing act of holding on to Bumrah, releasing an underperforming Thakur, and potentially incorporating Kuldeep is a move toward a more balanced and diversified bowling plan, designed to nullify England’s aggressive batting line. The second Test is now a make-or-break moment for India to tie the series, depending on tactical adaptability and bowing depth.
