Team India and their aim to claim victory of Second Test

Can India level the series in the second test?

India currently leads the English side by 244 runs in the second test of India tour of England 2025 at the Edgbaston. Even though Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star pacer was rested for the second test, Mohammed Siraj took over the charge against the hosts, and didn’t disappoint in any way. Which brings us to the question can India level the series in the second test?

Where India Stand Now?

India hold a commanding 244-run lead with five wickets in hand in their second innings at the second Test in Edgbaston, trailing 0-1 in the five-match series. Shubman Gill’s 269 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 87 have driven India to 587, building on a strong target. Mohammed Siraj’s 6/70, dismissing key England batsmen like Joe Root and Ben Stokes, was pivotal, despite centuries from Jamie Smith (184*) and Harry Brook (158).

The pitch, rated 3.1/10 for batting, favors seamers, and India’s inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar added depth. However, India’s winless record at Edgbaston (seven losses, one draw since 1967) and potential rain on day four pose challenges. England’s bowlers, led by Chris Woakes (2/59), remain a threat, but India’s current position is dominant.

How Can They Win the Second Test?

To level the series, India must aim for a lead exceeding 500 runs, a historically unchasable target in Tests. Shubman Gill should anchor the innings early on day four, avoiding early collapses, while Rishabh Pant’s aggressive batting can accelerate the lead. With rain forecast, India must maximize their batting time to set an imposing target.

On the bowling front, Mohammed Siraj’s pace and swing, combined with Kuldeep Yadav’s spin if conditions assist, can exploit Edgbaston’s seam-friendly pitch to take 20 wickets. Jadeja’s control and Sundar’s versatility will be crucial in restricting England’s inconsistent batting lineup. India must maintain intensity, capitalize on their lead, and push for a result to avoid a draw.
