IND: India’s takeaway from the T20 World Cup

India in T20 World Cup 2022

India’s Journey T20 WORLD CUP 2022

India in T20 World Cup: India even after starting the tournament win over Pakistan, had a setback against South Africa in the group stage match but later they recovered pretty well against the Netherlands all of a sudden everything fell apart as the England Batsman destroyed the Indian bowlers.

India’s weakness was exposed not once but twice during the T20 World Cup which cost them dearly. India was dismantled against South Africa and England with both the team for a weak bowling performance.

High-Expectations once again fail

During another World Cup, the same thing. The Indian cricket squad had high aspirations, but their quarterfinal match against England ended in a whimper. Despite having a team consisting of match-winners, excellent individuals, and seasoned T20 competitors, a world championship trophy is still elusive.

Rohit Sharma and company suffered a humiliating loss in Adelaide on Thursday, and they were immediately booted out of the T20 World Cup 2022.

KL Rahul skips games against powerful opponents

KL Rahul had memorable outings against elite teams despite scoring two consecutive half-centuries in the league. The 30-year-old had terrible performances against Pakistan, the Netherlands, South Africa, and England (semi-final), scoring 4, 9, 9, and 5, respectively. Rahul scored 50 and 51 against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, respectively. To establish his dominance, the vice-captain of the Indian team must develop into a “big-match player.”

Bowlers not performing against bigger teams

Due to a lack of seasoned fast bowlers and the fact that Brumah was unable to play due to a back injury, India had to rely on Mohammad Shami as a backup. However, things did not go as planned, and as a result, England eliminated India in the second T20 World Cup semi-finals.

India had fast bowlers in the form of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Shami and all three bowlers failed in the knockout game against England. Even though Arshdeep was the highest wicket-taker from India but failed to make a mark against England.

Batters didn’t maximize powerplay opportunities

Most of the fielding limits in the powerplay innings were too much for Indian batters to overcome. The team’s scoring rate in the first six overs was a pitiful 6.02. The fundamental cause of the problem is the early hesitation of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. In six tournament games, India lost nine wickets while in the powerplay. They only hit seven sixes throughout this phase.

India chooses experience over youth

Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel were a sure thing in India’s spin attack for the World Cup. India decided to go with Ravichandran Ashwin over Ravi Bishnoi, placing the latter on the standby list in favour of experience.

The decision to select Ashwin because he is the sole finger-spinner on the front line may not be as simple. Bishnoi largely relies on the googly and can take the ball away from the left-hander with his angles, as he has demonstrated in the IPL and during his brief international career.

Additionally, Ashwin can contribute with the bat in hand, which may have swung the decision in his favor during the squad selection.

Only Positive: Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav‘s Form

Thankfully for India, Kohli and Suryakumar had outstanding chemistry throughout the competition. In six games, the former skipper Virat scored 296 runs, four of which were half-centuries. His average is close to 100. SKY scored 239 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 189.68. The pair had a significant impact on the team’s performance during the league stage.
