What are ICC Rare Exception for PCB Before Champions Trophy 2025?
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 starts on 19th February, the tournament being hosted by Pakistan and India’s matches being held in Dubai as accepted within boards for a Hybrid format. With official squads being announced, tickets going for sale for matches being held in both Pakistan and Dubai. The only issue that remains is the venues aren’t being handed over by Pakistan to the ICC. What could be the issue? Let’s talk about ICC providing a rare exception for PCB before the Champions Trophy 2025.
A Talk about Deadlines
The initial deadline for the stadiums to be handed over to ICC was 2nd February, ICC has now extended the deadline until 12th February which is after the tri-series concludes. Typically the stadiums are to be handed over to ICC before 3 weeks of commencement, but in this case, the stadiums are being handed over a week before. Why is this happening?
The PCB is in a critical spot as it works towards ensuring stadiums are ready for the high-profile Champions Trophy. With refurbishment still ongoing in Lahore and Karachi just over a week before the event, the PCB remains hopeful of meeting deadlines.
PCB’s Stance
Pakistan is set to begin a tri-series with South Africa and New Zealand on February 8, 2025. Initially the series which was scheduled for Multan, has now been moved to Lahore and Karachi. This allows to test the progress and reliability of the venues, which will help them assess both venues ahead of the Champions Trophy, ensuring they’re in top shape for the eight-team competition.
Although PCB has been ensuring since day 1 that the venues will be completed in time for the tournament. The surprising move was the ICC agreeing to the PCB’s testing phase and granting a special exception to its usual “exclusivity period” rule.
