SA vs NZ 2nd Semi-Final Match of ICC Champions Trophy

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a formidable target of 362 runs for South Africa in their crucial ICC Champions Trophy semifinal match.

The Kiwis experienced an early setback as opener Will Young was dismissed for just 21 runs. However, Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson stepped in, delivering stellar performances that anchored New Zealand’s innings.

Ravindra displayed an impressive mix of composure and aggressive stroke play, ultimately scoring 108 runs off 120 balls. Williamson, known for his elegant style, contributed 102 runs from 94 balls, showcasing an exhibition of beautiful shots to keep the scoreboard ticking.

In addition to their stellar centuries, the middle-order proved crucial, with Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips both finishing with 49 runs. Their partnerships added vital stability, with Mitchell’s quickfire innings bolstering the scoring rate.

Glenn Phillips, remaining not out on 49, accelerated the run flow towards the end of the innings, while Michael Bracewell contributed a brisk 16 runs, ensuring New Zealand posted a daunting total of 362/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

As South Africa began their chase, they were initially buoyed by solid contributions from openers Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma, who scored 69 and 56 runs, respectively. However, New Zealand’s bowlers, spearheaded by the disciplined Matt Henry (2/43) and Mitchell Santner (3/43), worked tirelessly to constrict the South African batting order.

Santner’s livewire performance in the middle overs, characterized by his tight line and length, combined with Bracewell’s critical break in the innings, dismantled South Africa’s hopes of a successful chase.

Aiden Markram scored 31 runs, and David Miller made a strong contribution with 100 runs off 67 balls. Despite their efforts, South Africa lost wickets at key moments, which stopped them from building stable partnerships.

On the bowling side, Lungi Ngidi bowled well, taking 3 wickets for 72 runs, but New Zealand’s bowlers were too strong for South Africa. The team ended up with 312 runs before getting all out, falling 50 runs short of their target.
