ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Afghanistan’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Afghanistan Strengths and Weaknesses in Champions Trophy

The Afghan men’s cricket team has been in outstanding form for the past decade, helping them climb to the top of the world rankings and establishing themselves as a dominant force in recent international cricket tournaments. With the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, here’s a look into Afghanistan Strengths and Weaknesses in Champions Trophy.

Strengths

Legendary Spin Attack

Afghanistan team with their spin maestros Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, Noor Ahmad, and Allah Ghazanfar might arguably have the best spinner squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy tournament. The four spinners have their unique attack style which guarantee dismissals across pitches.

While two veterans Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi bring valuable experience, Noor Ahmad and Allah Ghazanfar add a mystery element for the opposition sides in the tournament. With the Pakistan Pitches favoring the spinners, their attack will be inevitable.

Strong Opening Stance

The openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran could form one of the strongest opening pairs in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Both players have formed a mental understanding of their strengths and play accordingly. Since the year 2020, they’ve put in 1514 runs as an opening pair in 31 innings, second only to India’s Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. If Afghanistan needs to post a big total or chase a strong successfully, this duo will play a key role, and will be eager to showcase their talent in the Champions Trophy.

Weaknesses

Underwhelming Middle Order

Even though Afghanistan has explosive batsmen, they have consistently struggled to score solid innings in ODIs. The team’s dependence on impact openers like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Najibullah Zadran could only mean if they ever struggle to open with strong runs, the middle order can often fail to stabilize the innings, resulting in low-target or innings collapse. This tactic can affect their ability to set or chase competitive totals.

Low Exposure to ICC Events

Team Afghanistas’s low experience in global tournaments is a major barrier for the team. Even though they’ve made impressive progress in world cricket, their involvement in major events and lack of experience show their incapabilities during crucial moments. To back this up, if we look at their 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, they struggled to close out games against top teams, which shows their need for more experience in high-profile ICC Events.

If they can play their matches right, and find a balance between their strengths and weaknesses, they could have a successful tournament ahead.
