The next big thing was when Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal entered cricket. His stroke-play has attracted a lot of attention over the years. He promised so much in all three formats, but unwanted events were detrimental to his career. In 2019, he twice made it to the national team but was unable to maintain his position.
Quetta Gladiators was banned from playing for the Pakistan Super League 2020 edition (PSL) in February. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now, to add insult to injury, given him a three-year ban. He is said to have violated the Anti-Corruption Code of the PCB under Article 2.4.4. He failed to show off his corrupt practices made to him in front of the PSL.
Umar Akmal’s temperament was sometimes questionable
Two renowned cricket analysts, Akash Chopra and Harsha Bhogle, recently shared their views on the suspension of Akmal. Both said the right-hander possesses a lot of potentials. Chopra said he had no proper temper and wanted Akmal to be more careful.
“Umar Akmal had a lot of talent and promise. His temperament was questionable at times, but that is the case with most batsmen in Pakistan, and he was no different. It could have been an excuse in the earlier era that cricketers didn’t know the protocols about reporting a fixing approach, “Chopra was quoted as saying in a video on YouTube.
“But nowadays, from the beginning of their career, every player is taught about these things, and you know that if someone has approached you with a suspicious offer, then you must immediately inform. If you fail to do so, then there’s always a doubt that you might have accepted or considered that offer,” he added.
Together with Akmal, Bhogle also named Mohammad Ashraful, who was convicted in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) edition. The veteran thinks talent isn’t too important.
