In less than 18 months, Cricket Australia will have had four chairs. This is following Lachlan Henderson’s announcement that he will stand down in the new year. He is accepting a new position in the corporate world.
The seat will be filled by Mike Baird. He is a former premier of New South Wales, in February of 2019.
Henderson Resign from Cricket Australia Chair Post to Take New Post
Henderson will stay on the board. He was named chair in February after being chosen as Earl Eddings’ long-term replacement after the latter’s resignation in October 2021. Prior to Henderson, Richard Freudenstein served in the position pro tem.
Henderson said, “The new role I’ve taken in my home city Perth will make it difficult to devote the time required as Chair. So I have decided this is the right time to hand over the role.”
Baird Takes Charge as New Cricket Australia Chair
The next broadcast rights and new MoU are presently being negotiated. Mike Baird will become the chair at a key time for the game in Australia.
Talking about the same, Baird said. “Lachlan has made a great contribution as Chair. I’m delighted he will continue to provide his considerable business and cricket expertise on the CA Board.”
“It is an honour to take such an important role in Australian cricket. It is at a time when so much exciting work is being done to grow our national sport and take it forward. I’m pleased to have the chance to work even more closely with CEO Nick Hockley and his team. Keeping in mind all those working across Australian cricket.”
Tension in Cricket Australia Board
After David Warner withdrew from his effort to have his leadership restriction lifted. A procedure that was overseen by CEO Nick Hockley and approved by the board, it was a contentious week for CA.
The independent review panel’s decision to hold the hearing in public left Warner with no choice but to withdraw his request to have his lifetime leadership ban. It was imposed following the Newlands Test in 2018 overturned. According to the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA), which said that Warner had no other option. On the eve of the second Test against the West Indies, Warner made a dramatic announcement in which he alleged that the review panel had sought a “public lynching” by essentially putting the events of Newlands through a retrial.
Currently, Australia is playing the West Indies at home. They have already won the first test and are on their way of to win the second one as well.
