We look at a few such forgotten IPL overseas gems:

#1 Douglas Marillier

He was one of the original mavericks. Douglas Marillier is a name that Indian fans can never forget. He took Zimbabwe home singlehandedly in a game in Faridabad that Zimbabwe had no business winning. Marillier was the one who played the scoop and reverse scoop with panache. He put on his pyrotechnics against the likes of Glenn McGrath too. Marillier was a handy off-spinner too who could chip in with a couple of overs. He would have been an ideal overseas pick for any team.

#2 Ricardo Powell

There were a few cricketers who almost always turned up against India. Ricardo Powell was one such cricketer. He tormented Indian bowlers, especially in a series that was held in Toronto. Powell knew to bat in just a single gear. He along with Ramnaresh Sarwan tore apart South Africa’s bowling in the opening game of the 2003 World Cup. The Windies managed to upset the host nation thanks to their blitzkrieg at the end. Powell would have been in high demand had he played the IPL.

#3 Lance Klusener

He was the player of the tournament in the 1999 ODI World Cup. Lance Klusener almost took South Africa over the line in the World Cup. He went from strength to strength till the next World Cup. Klusener had the ability to clear any boundary no matter how big. He clocked in good pace too with the ball. Klusener picked up an 8-wicket haul in India on his Test debut. He was a complete package who could fit in any team.

#4 Steve Waugh

He was known as one of the strongest characters in the game. Steve Waugh’s Australia started its journey of world domination. He always brought his best game when the chips were down. It was Steve Waugh’s excellent hundred against South Africa in the super six stage that eventually helped Australia pip South Africa in the semis. Waugh’s ability to bowl medium-pace picking key wickets would have made him an invaluable asset in the IPL.

#5 Aravinda de Silva

He was someone who influenced an entire nation. Aravinda de Silva was popularly called the ‘Mad Max’. He was the player of the match in both the semis and the finals of Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning campaign in 1996. Aravinda was a captain’s delight who could play the role of an anchor/aggressor/off-spin bowler depending on the match situation. A player of his calibre would have fetched huge bids in an IPL auction. Needless to say, he would have been integral to the team’s plans.

#6 Neil Johnson

In his very brief career spanning over two years, Neil Johnson played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s success in the 1999 ODI World Cup. He carried his bat in a game against Australia scoring 132. But his best moment came against South Africa when he put in a brilliant all-round performance to upset the tournament favourites. For someone who opened the batting and bowling, Johnson would have been one of the hottest properties in the IPL!
