Why Rohit and Virat are not playing the T20 series against South Africa?
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been left out of the Indian men’s team for the T20I and ODI series against South Africa.
Following the end of the five-match T20I series against recently crowned ICC World Cup 2023 winners Australia, Team India will travel to South Africa for their first multi-format tour following the ODI World Cup. Team India was defeated by Pat Cummins’ Australia in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 earlier this month at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Let us look at the details of Why Rohit and Virat are not playing the T20 series against South Africa:
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), both veteran batsmen have requested a break after the 2023 World Cup. The captain, Rohit, and the No. 3 batter, Virat Kohli, played in every game of the tournament. They also took a break from the ongoing five-match Twenty20 International series against Australia, which began shortly after the World Cup.
“Mr. Rohit Sharma and Mr. Virat Kohli had requested the Board for a break from the white-ball leg of the tour,” a BCCI statement read.
The sides will play 3 T20 Internationals (T20Is) from December 10-14, 3 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) from December 17-21, and 2 Tests from December 26 to January 7.

Is this the end for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in T20Is?
The biggest question, arises by contradicting, unconfirmed reports that circulated prior to the selection release. Which was whether Rohit and Kohli would be on the team. The question now is what this means for their future in T20Is going up to the 2024 World Cup.
There isn’t a simple solution. Neither player, however, has played T20I cricket in over a year. Their IPL record hasn’t been the best in a long time, with talented young players emerging to take their place and performing admirably. Among them are Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
When they didn’t play a T20I series before the 2023 World Cup, it looked like another dip of their careers in the format. However, the fact that the BCCI just specified ‘break’ indicates that selectors have kicked the can down the road and avoided the difficult choice for another month.
