Webb’s Last-Ball Six Becomes Helps Renegades Defeat Sixers

Jess Jonassen bagged her second consecutive four-fer as Brisbane Heat posted a comfortable eight-wicket win to boost her position at the top of the points table.

Asked to bat, Scorchers lost their openers early on. With a steady but sluggish stand, Georgia Redmayne and Natalie Sciver resurrected their innings. Jonassen trapped Redmayne leg-before. Even as others got into brief partnerships, there was no panic among bowlers due to the scoring rate. Three more snaked the sluggish left-armer as Sammy-Jo Johnson bagged a brace to reduce Scorchers to 112 for 8.

In the low run-chase, even as they lost two early wickets in the power play, the table-toppers had little trouble. But Beth Mooney, in Jonassen’s company, brought the innings on track. The duo didn’t go on the offensive, but they kept the necessary level under control by keeping a pattern of scoring a boundary everywhere. When the duo smashed Nicole Bolton for 23 runs, including a six and a few boundaries, they shifted gears in the 13th over.

Mooney’s unbeaten 60 helped chase down the target in just 16.1 overs. In her 44-ball stay, the ‘keeper-bat’ stroked eight boundaries and partnered in an unbeaten 81-run stand despite Jonassen.

Brief Scores: Perth Scorchers Women 112/8 in 20 overs (Natalie Sciver 26, Chloe Piparo 19; Jess Jonassen 4-23, Sammy-Jo Johnson 2-16) lost to Brisbane Heat Women113/2 in 16.1 overs (Beth Mooney 60*, Jess Jonassen 32*)by 8 wickets.

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades, Sydney

Courtney Webb’s last-ball six helped Melbourne Renegades register a win over Sydney Sixers on Sunday (November 17) to their hopes alive for a semifinal berth. Even after the fall of Perry in the 17th over, Kapp’s innings scored a calm 45-ball 37. She stroked through the backward point and third man area in the 20th over three boundaries to end unbeaten at 52 and carry the hosts to 139 for 4.

The 140-run target was always going to be changeable, even against a high-quality bowling attack. And even a poor display by the rest in the top order could be made up with the big-hitting Danielle Wyatt keeping the innings on one side. With a fine 43-ball 55, which included eight boundaries and a six, the English opener set up the chase. But given the poor batting show around her, Renegades was reduced in the 10th over to 67 for 4- which included two run-outs.

She found good company in Courtney Webb, though, and carried out the good work from there. Kapp was unable to turn her good form into her bowling earlier in the day and proved costly, granting 35 runs from her 4-over quota.

For an unbeaten 31-ball 34, Carly Leeson scored a 16-ball 10, while Webb hung on till the end. She took the team over the line with a six off Kapp over the long-on fielder to win off the last ball.

Brief Scores: Sydney Sixers Women 139/4 in 20 overs (Marizanne Kapp 52*, Elysse Perry 37; Lea Tahuhu 2-20, Molly Strano 2-24) lost to Melbourne Renegades Women141/8 in 20 overs (Danielle Wyatt 55, Courtney Webb 34*; Lauren Smith 2-13, Erin Burns 2-23) by 2 wickets.
