Legendary former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir turns 41 today
Today, October 14, 2020, former India opener and current BJP MP Gautam Gambhir turns 41 years old. Gambhir, the unsung hero of India’s two World Cup victories, had a legendary career for both India and the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders.
Early Stages of Life
Gambhir was born on 14th October 1981 in New Delhi to homemaker Seema Gambhir and businessman Deepak Gambhir, who runs a textile company. The sister of Gambhir, Ekta, is two years younger than him. In 1947, his grandfather relocated from Multan to Delhi. Gambhir was adopted by his maternal grandparents 18 days after his birth, and he has lived with them ever since. When Gambhir was ten years old, he started playing cricket.
World Cup Hero
In the final games of both the 2011 World Cup at home and the 2007 World T20 in South Africa, which India won, he scored the greatest totals. Even while occasionally credit was given to others for their flamboyance, Gambhir shone brightly once the going got tough.
Gambhir’s Stats
Nobody can ever forget his epic 11-hour journey to win a Test match in New Zealand. Where he also attained the top spot among Test batsmen in 2009. From 2003 to 2016, Gautam Gambhir represented India in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is, where he scored 4154 runs in test crickets, 5238 runs in ODIs, and 932 in T20Is
In terms of opening partnerships for India in Test cricket, Gambhir and Virender Sehwag hold the record. With 11 centuries and 25 half-centuries stands, Gambhir and Sehwag added 4,412 runs at 52.52 in 87 innings.
In addition, he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL championships in 2012 and 2014 before retiring from cricket in 2018. Since then, he has become involved in politics, running for and winning the 2019 general elections from East Delhi on the BJP ticket.
Individual Awards
In 2008, the President of India presented him with the Arjuna Award, the second-highest athletic honor in India.
- In 2009, he ranked first among batsmen in the ICC Test rankings.
- He received the ICC Test Player of the Year honor in the same year.
- He is currently the Lucknow Super Giants’ IPL coach.
A philanthropist in nature
Gambhir is also recognized for his Gautam Gambhir Foundation, which works for the welfare of people in his area as well as children of paramilitary martyrs, empowering them by covering their whole educational needs. He is well renowned for standing up for the Indian Army’s soldiers.
