Former cricketer Arun Lal (Happy Birthday Arun Lal) is celebrating his 67th birthday today.

Arun was born on August 01, 1955 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh and is known for his outstanding domestic career and his commentary in broadcasting.

Arun Lal may have been heard by this age as a commentator and broadcaster, but the older generation remembers him as a batsman with tremendous potential and an outstanding First-Class record who ultimately underwhelmed on the international circuit.

He belongs from a family of cricketers as his father Dhir Jagdish Lal was a first-class cricket player. While his uncle Dhir Muni Lal and Cousin Akash Lal also played at domestic level.

When Arun Lal made his international debut?

He first represented India in a Test match at Chennai in 1982, scoring a valiant 63 runs. His goal of playing on the field alongside the great was realised as he put together a 156-run partnership with Sunil Gavaskar.

Sadly, this talented young batsman was unable to succeed in international cricket. The test average of 26 and ODI average of 9 don’t truly support the potential he had.

Even though Arun Lal’s international career was short and unsuccessful, his domestic career are simply amazing. Over 10,000 runs were scored by Arun in the domestic level. He transitioned to cricket commentary after declaring his retirement and quickly rose to the top among broadcasters.

Arun also served as a coach for the Bengal squad in 2020, guiding them to the Ranji Trophy finals.

Records and Achievements

Arun had a strong start to his career, scoring 63 against Sri Lanka in his first game in Chennai (then known as Madras) in 1982. He hit another half-century and collected 51 runs against Pakistan in his next test.

Arun scored 5 double century throughout his remarkable domestic career, including 3 in the Ranji Trophy and 2 in the Duleep Trophy. Twice, he was within some runs short from a triple century before being ejected at 287 both the times.
