Before the IPL 2023 auction, Cameron Green was working hard at the nets in Melbourne. The youthful all-rounder was putting himself through his paces at the MCG as Australia prepared for the Boxing Day Test match against South Africa, unconcerned by the rumours of a potential bidding war for him.
In the first day of the second Test of the two-match series against Australia, Cameron Green pulled up his first 5-wicket haul, reaping the benefits of his labours. After Pat Cummins won the toss and made the bold decision to bowl first, Green was outstanding with the old ball in the last session as South Africa was dismissed for 189.

A few days prior, Cameron Green, the most expensive Australian player ever purchased at the auction, set several records at the IPL 2023 mini-auction in Kochi. After a heated bidding war, Green was sold to the five-time champion Mumbai Indians for Rs 17.5 crore. After England all-rounder Sam Curran was sold for Rs 18.5 crore to Punjab Kings on Friday, December 23, he became the second-most expensive player at the auction.
Green has established himself as a strong all-arounder in all game formats. It was his turn to shine in white on Monday. As he provided Australia an early breakthrough by dismissing Theunis de Bruyn, who was making his first appearance in the Test XI since 2019. Green effectively used his height to bounce the top batter for South Africa out for 12.
Green finished with figures of 5 for 27 in just 10.4 overs.
In the last session, Green was the one to finally crack the South African defence as he broke the 112-run partnership between wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen. However, the two batters had led a strong resistance as the Proteas had fallen to 67 for 5.
Green dismissed Verreynne for 52 in the 65th over before coming back to dismiss Jansen for 59 in the very next over. Green then dismissed South Africa’s last two players, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, for 189.
David Warner, the opening batsman for Australia, is under pressure to keep his spot in the lineup beyond this three-match series as he celebrates his 100th Test match. Warner scored 0 and 3 in the Brisbane test. And it has been almost three years since he reached a test hundred.
Australia, which has a 1-0 advantage in the three-game series. Is attempting to defeat South Africa at home for the first time since the 2005–06 season.
