Spinner Mitchell Swepson Added To Squad.
The 26-year-old leg spinner, Mitchell Swepson, who is from Queensland was added to the Australian Squad for the third and final Test match against New Zealand in Sydney. The hosts are exploring the option of playing two specialist spinners on Thursday on 26th December. Trevor Hohns’ statements on Swepson:
National chief selector Trevor Hohns said, in an official statement, “if the conditions demand having Mitch in Sydney gives us the option to play two specialist spinners.”
Hohns said, “Having Sid(Peter Siddle) as the 13th man in the team and his experience at the MCG( Melbourn Cricket Ground) has been invaluable. The fast bowlers for this Test are greatly assisted by his observation and if he is having around the group was great.”
In the summer, James had been with the squad and performed well in Sheffield Shield matches and was thought of as deserving a recall to the team.
“When we get to Sydney we will make those evaluations”.
If selected, in a two-pronged spin attack he will bowl along with Nathan Lyon. Swepson is right-arm leg-break bowler, who has taken 12 wickets in 6 Sheffield Shield games at a run rate of 26.58. He was a member of Australia’s Test squad for tours of India and Bangladesh in 2017.
In a Twenty20 match against England at Edgbaston in 2018, he took two wickets on his debut.
In the Big Bash League, Peter Siddle was recalled to the squad for Melbourne but was not selected and has been released back to the Adelaide Strikers.
The third Test between Australia and New Zealand will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3rd to 7th.
