England Vs Australia 1st ODI Highlights: Australia Wins By 19 Runs

Australia, battling first in the 1st ODI vs. England in Manchester, posted 294/9 in their 50 overs. England, led by Sam Billings 118, fell short by 19 runs, scoring 275/9. Australia missed the opportunities of David Warner (6) and Aaron Finch (16) early. Marcus Stoinis, who was promoted to 3 in Steve Smith’s absence, scored 43 quickfire before falling.

Marnus Labuschagne (21) was trapped by Adil Rashid. Rashid struck again to delete Alex Carey (10) shortly afterward. Mitchell Marsh (73) and Glenn Maxwell (77) then set up a partnership that put Australia on the road to recovery.

They scored from 123/5 to 249/5 before both dropped in an effort to increase the ranking. Their partnership was Australia’s 6th biggest stand against England in ODIs, breaking a 29-year-old record.

England was off to a bad start in their chase but was given some momentum in the chase by a 5th wicket partnership between Jonny Bairstow (84) and Sam Billings (118), who scored his highest ODI score. Josh Hazlewood (3/26) and Adam Zampa (4/55) were the wreckers. Billings kept England’s hopes alive until the last one, but he was out of the last ball, England falling 19 runs short.

Highlights:

ENG Opt To Bowl:

England has won the toss and has opted to field first.

Smith Misses Out On Action In Manchester:

Steve Smith to miss the first ODI as a precautionary measure after copping a ball to the head at training yesterday.

1st ODI Begins:

Finch and Warner are heading into the center. The team of England is moving in as well. Warner’s head. Woakes to make the first bowl for England. Here we’re going! The first runs come from Warner with a drive to the third man for two. Strong running between the wickets and the openers. AUS 4-0 after 1.

Warner Bowled!

Warner is out of here. He’s going for 6. Archer’s out to get him. Bursts through his safety and clatters his bails. Early wicket to England. Warner didn’t look relaxed today. Marcus Stoinis is coming in at 3. AUS 13/1 to 3.1.

Woakes 0/30 In 6 Overs – AUS 50/2 After 11:

Labuschagne follows Stoinis with the two openings back in the hut cheaply. Archer and Wood have shown that the pace is going to do the trick on this board. Finch, who had always been hanging back to deal with Archer’s pace and bounce, had a subtle tickle to the keeper just as Wood had come along. Woakes bowls on his 6th trot. Labuschagne times an overpitched ball back past him for four at the end of the 11.AUS 50/2 after 11.

Another Wicket – Stoinis Goes For 43:

Stoinis is attacking Moeen. Lofts him to the boundary over the cover area. Promoted to number 3, Stoinis has done an incredibly good job so far, galloping through his 40s in no time. But then it’s Wood who’s going to hit again! Again, it’s the batsman who’s called the keeper. Stoinis is out of here! He’s going to get 43 rapid-fire off 34 balls. Wood’s going to take a second wicket. AUS 80/3 at 15.2.

Adil Rashid vs Mitch Marsh:

Mitch Marsh is coming in at 5. Notably, Warner and Carey are possibly the only two in the Australian team today who are likely not to be called to the bowl today. All the other 9 have at least a fair reputation as bowlers. Both batsmen are still sweeping Moeen Ali for runs. Marsh sweeps four of the last ball of the 17th. It’s time for Adil Rashid, then. Marsh, as we know, is battling quality spin like his. He’s going to get a four to run to the fine leg to start. AUS 98/3 after 18 years.

Rashid Now Highest ENG Wicket-Taker In ODIs vs AUS:

Archer replaces Moeen Ali, likely to capitalize on a match-up against the new man, Maxwell. The overthrow of Moeen Ali goes to the ground, to the border, even if not to the bat, after a while to the battering side. AUS 133/5 on the 27.

Last Recognized Partnership Firing For AUS:

Marsh has a four-wheel-drive off Archer. Then Maxwell comes into the act. Pulls Rashid for a mighty heave, and beats sub-fielder Banton in the middle. In spite of the loss of wickets, a few fast runs are coming in this partnership. AUS 152/5 after 30.

Partnership Between Maxwell, Marsh:

Maxwell times a perfect drive away from Moeen Ali to find a fence in the extra cover area. The two batsmen pass the score along in singles. It’s a great opportunity, though, for both of them to prove their credence in this batting order. So far, they’ve scored 41 runs, playing riskless cricket. AUS 164/5 after 33.

50 For Mitch Marsh:

Moeen Ali takes out his last cup. Finishes his day with a 0/59 mark. Adil Rashid has taken his quota of overs back to the cup. Maxwell’s edge passes past the keeper. He’s going to the 40s. Marsh, at the other end of the lane, gets to his 50. The last 12 outs to go. Woakes is the first to come back to the cup. U.S. 197/5 after 38.

Rashid Finishes With 2/55:

Maxwell starts to burn. This time past Archer in the middle of the four. Woakes isn’t pleased by Archer’s effort. Rashid bowls are his last. Maxwell is trying to loft him for four, but he’s not getting the gap. Five singles out of the back. Rashid comes to an end with estimates of 2/55. The Australian middle order had rocked early. Since then, there has been no way in England. AUS 230/5 after 42.

Archer To Maxwell – 6, 6, Wicket:

Seven runs are coming off Woakes’s over. This is now Australia’s 6th wicket stand against England, surpassing 112 by Simon O’Donnell and Mark Waugh in Sydney, 1991. Archer is going back to bowl out his quota right now. And what a welcome Maxwell gave him! Consecutive sixes to get started! Two big shots split on the side of the neck. Pressure on Archer, guy. A bit of a pause in moving the ball because of the big hits. The next ball is a wicket! Maxwell is cutting it to his stumps. He’s gone out of 59 balls for 77. Disaster for Australia, just as they were trying to attack. AUS 249/6 on 43.3.

Archer Gets Cummins:

Cummins is going to fall to Archer. Morgan is gathering an easy pick. He’s going for 9. Starc is going to have to come out to bat at 9. AUS 260/7 at 45.3. Starc is spinning as well. Billings runs in to get his hands on the ball, but he can’t catch it. Starc is alive. AUS 264/7, 46.

Marsh Falls For 73:

Wood is going to get Marsh’s wicket. Marsh is going to drop 73 out of 100 balls. He was looking to get a single to hold his strike in the next round, but he was defeated by Wood’s speed, who now has three buckets. Zampa is at 10. AUS 273/8 to 47.

Wood Finishes With 3/54, Archer Finishes With 3/57:

Archer misses the length to start his last one, and Starc plays the perfect four-wheel drive. There are 9 runs in the 48th over. Archer ends his day with a figure of 3 for 57. Wood’s last bowl in the 49th. Zampa and Starc struggled to make successful correlations like the wood bowls at death. It’s just four that runoff. AUS 286/8 over 49.

AUS Score 294/9 In 50 Overs:

Woaks to the 50th of a cup. A close-up from him to finish, with no fluency to this end of the innings. Zampa ‘s top edges and Woakes himself is captured. This is his first wicket of the day. Zampa is going to collapse for 5. Starc is facing the last stone. And the last ball of the innings hits a six!
Smashes on the midwicket. Starc is coming to an end with 19 * off 12. Australia ended 294/9 in 50 overs, aided by a big partnership between Marsh and Maxwell, which contributed to their recovery from 123/5.

Tidy Start From Aussies:

Josh Hazlewood is partnering Starc with a new ball. Bairstow gets the first time he runs off the bat in the innings with a single to end the second period. Roy’s going to get off the mark with a three run-hit from the short ball. Nice start with the Aussie strike pair. ENG 7/0 to 3.

Roy Out – Brilliant Caught And Bowled By Hazlewood:

The pressure is asking Roy! Too many balls are zipping past the bat. Roy appeared perplexed for a moment. He’s taking a catch back to Hazlewood to send Australia its first breakthrough in the fourth. Roy out there for 3. Hazlewood caught a one-handed catch in his follow-up to give Australia a chance. Root comes in at 3. ENG 7/1 after 3.5.

Hazlewood Bowls 2 Maidens:

Bairstow flat bats a cut for four as Starc bowls a short ball outside the wall. This is some sort of release of pressure on Bairstow and England. Hazlewood manages to annoy the batsmen. He’s going to bowl his second consecutive maiden over.

Root Out For 1:

Cummins is replacing Starc. There’s 2 going in the back. And Hazlewood comes back and takes a second bowl. Root tickles to the keeper. Root is out for 1. England are 13/2 after 7.1 overs and in big trouble. Morgan steps in at 4. Hazlewood’s figures now 2/3 in 4 overs.

Hazlewood (6-3-5-2) All Over Bairstow:

Morgan takes a short ball from the Cummins and sends it to the fine leg line. Bairstow is still in some trouble, looking at the pitch with skepticism, giving away a few edges that land safely. Bairstow looks all over Hazlewood in a sad hand, bowls over his third maiden. ENG 28/2 after 12.

Zampa Strikes In First Over – Morgan Falls For 23:

For the first time, Spin introduced Finch. Zampa to the bowl on the 15th. And he’s going to do the trick for Australia. Morgan, the one batsman who looked risky today, he’s out. Morgan slogs and Maxwell is trapped in midwicket. He’s going to crash for 23. England is in trouble right now. ENG 55/3 to 14.5.

England Suffer Torrid Time:

Mitchell Starc brought a second spell back to the attack. 3 runs away while Billings and Bairstow try to wake themselves up from the nightmare. Zampa is giving away just two runs in the next round, and there’s an lbw appeal against Bairstow, who’s only having a bad day in office. Bairstow is going to get a couple of runs against Starc. Zampa goes up in big appeal and Australia do Review against Billings. ENG 68/4 after 21.

England Score 45 In 5 Overs:

Marsh bowls are yet another quiet spot. Cummins is replacing Zampa, and England is also going after him. This time, Billings the aggressor. Drives the four to get started. The next two shots are going over the head of the keeper. The top edge goes all the way to the six. Again, there are 15 runs in the over. Maxwell has launched it. 8 runs off the over. England has scored 45 runs in the last 5 overs.ENG 122/4 after 28.

Billings Bairstow Partnership Gives England Hope:

Bairstow fires on, claiming to have recovered his form. Slams Cummins over midwicket for six. Stoinis, the 7th bowler, the 30th bat. He bowls no-ball, and Bairstow plunders the boundary of the extra pitch. Billings manages to reach a fence with an uncomfortable tug against Cummins. England finishing some momentum in this partnership, now 88 runs off 89 balls. In 145/4 after 31.

England Need 143 In 17 Overs:

Stoinis continues to bowl in the middle of the overs as both sides brace for what appears to be a wild end to the match. 6 runs off the field, all of them attempting to catch singles and trying to turn them into twos. 150 is coming up for England, with this partnership approaching 100 on its own. Starc, who still has five overs, returned to the attack in the 33rd as Australia was looking for another breakthrough to kill off the contest. He’s only giving away 1 run in his back. 152/4 of ENG after 33.

Bairstow Attacks – Starc In Discomfort:

It’s over six runs from Zampa. There are still some signs of trouble for Australia. Starc, in some apparent discomfort with his groyne, keeps going to the tub. In the 35th over, Bairstow charges him. Four is going past the bowler. A six is then pounded into the midwicket stands, and the Australian fielders can not locate the ball. New balls are required. ENG 169/4 after 37.

Bairstow OUT:

Australia’s got a big bin. Zampa ‘s going to get Bairstow. The England Opener, who looked to have found his touch at the beginning of a torrid period, is out for 84 out of 107 balls. Hazlewood is coming under the deep pick. Billings, 49, is joined by Moeen Ali. 174/5 of ENG after 36.

Hazlewood’s Third Wicket:

Hazlewood back on the offensive on follow up on his medicinal opening spell. There are three runs from his over. 2/24 of his 9 overs so far. Billings is going to be 50, but there’s a lot of work left to do for England. Glenn Maxwell to the 38th cup. It’s just two runs in the over. Hazlewood to finish his quota. Moeen Ali, who’s been struggling to find the runs, is trapped in the frame. Hazlewood’s third wicket. ENG 182/6 after 38.4.

Billings Takes Charge Of Chase – ENG Need 74 In 7 overs:

Billings is switching to an even more offensive level. 13 off the 41st, Billings coming down the track to Marsh and bashing him on the side of the leg for six. Ten runs in the 42nd of Zampa. Two reverse sweeps for four from Billings in that over. Starc returns in the 43rd over. Billings moves into the 80s. This is his career-best ODI score now. ENG 221/6 after 43.

ENG Need 43 In 2 Overs:

Starc and Cummins are strangling England, but the one thing that England must remember is that the 50th position would be bowled by a part-timer. The Starc bowls are the 48th. Singles are almost any ball off. But Billings, who’s been in his 90s for a while now, is hit on the helmet and wants a change of head guard. ENG 252/8 wants 43 out of 2 overs after 48.

Australia Win By 19 Runs:

The last bowl of Mitch Marsh is done. It’s 28 to get. Will Billings be able to pull out a miracle in Manchester? Only a leg bye and a single Archer from the first two balls leaves more than six to get off the remaining ball. The third shot, four! Singles to finish things off. And Billings is off the last ball for 118. England finishes with 275/9 in their 50 overs, losing 19 runs.
