England name squad with Archer boost ahead of 2nd Test against India

England test squad vs India

England have received a timely boost ahead of the second Test against India at Edgbaston as Jofra Archer returns to the squad for the first time in over four years. Let us look into the details of the England test squad vs India of the England Tour of India 2025.

Archer’s inclusion is the only change from the squad that secured a thrilling five-wicket win at Headingley to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second Test begins on July 2, Wednesday, in Birmingham.

The fast bowler, who last played a Test in Ahmedabad back in 2021, coincidentally against India, has struggled with persistent injuries that kept him out of red-ball contention. However, after marking his return in the County Championship with Sussex, Archer has now been fast-tracked into the Test setup.

His presence adds serious firepower to an already potent seam attack that includes Chris Woakes, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton, Sam Cook, and Brydon Carse.

Ben Stokes and his side will be brimming with confidence after pulling off a record-breaking 371-run chase at Headingley, the second-highest successful chase at the venue.

England’s approach was fearless, led by a balanced batting lineup and a disciplined bowling unit that kept India under pressure throughout the Test.

While Archer’s addition may see Carse or Tongue make way, the rest of the playing XI is likely to remain unchanged. England’s strategy of aggressive batting and fast, short-pitched bowling will be further strengthened by Archer’s raw pace and experience.

India, on the other hand, will look to regroup quickly. Their bowling attack lacked bite in the fourth innings, and with conditions at Edgbaston often favouring seam, selection tweaks might be on the cards for Shubman Gill’s team.

Team India had put up an imposing 471 in the first innings of the Leeds Test, built on three outstanding centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant.

The batting unit looked solid again in the second innings, with Rahul and Pant scoring centuries to set a defendable total. However, India’s bowlers struggled on a flat final-day pitch as England’s aggressive approach under Ben Stokes paid off once again.
