ENG vs SA 2nd Test: Stokes, Foakes shine as England maintain lead by 241 after day two

ENG vs SA 2nd Test Match Highlights: England maintained their dominance on the second day of the 2nd test match by taking 264 run lead at the halfway stage of the game at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.

England, who started the second day with 111 for 3 went on to post 415 in their first innings to grab a solid 264-run lead and put the visitors on the back foot.

It was England’s skipper Ben Stokes and wicket-keeper batter Ben Foakes, who starred on the second day for England as both smashed splendid centuries to provide their side edge over the first test-winning side.

Started the day with 40 runs behind of visitors, England lost two early wickets in the morning session and were still 4 runs behind with only 5 wickets in hand.

But, Ben Stokes was in some other mood on Friday as he did a 173-run partnership for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Ben Foakes to keep on track.

He walked back to the pavilion only after smashing his 12th ton in test cricket and also after helping the English side cross 300-mark. It was Stokes’s 12th century in tests cricket, while his first as skipper.

After Stokes, Ben Foakes took the responsibility to take his forward on his shoulder and hit a brilliant century in the process. He was 113* when England decided to declare the innings after the wicket of Jack Leach (11).

England declared their first innings at 415 for 9 and asked a tough 264 runs to chase first and then set the target question from the visitors.

For South Africa, Anrich Nortje bagged the most number of wickets (3). Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj both grabbed 2-2. While Lungi Ngidi and Simon Harmer took a wicket each.

South Africa’s openers Dean Elgar (11*) and Sarel Erwee (12*) successfully navigated a challenging nine-over stretch before the close, ensuring the Proteas finish on 23-0 and reduce the gap to 241.
