The West Indies cricketer Kieron Pollard, on Wednesday, announced his retirement from international cricket. This development occurred just a day before Mumbai Indians are going to clash with Chennai Super Kings.
He shared his decision via an Instagram post on his official account. A video of 5minutes and 48 seconds duration has been shared showing Pollard’s past match performances along with a voiceover, which can be heard saying about the cricketer’s decision of bidding farewell to international cricket.
“After careful deliberation I’ve today decided to retire from international cricket. As is the case of many young persons it was a dream of mine to represent the West Indies team from the time I was a boy of 10 years and I’m proud to have represented West Indies cricket for over 15 years in both the T20 and ODI forms of the game”, he said.
Sharing his feelings about his first international debut, he went on to say, “I can still vividly remember making my international debut in 2007 under the leadership of my childhood hero, Brian Lara. Wearing those maroon colors and playing alongside such greats has been a privilege that I never took lightly, soul in every facet of the game – whether bowling, batting, or fielding.”
Kieron Pollard further said captaining West Indies was “the highest honor bestowed” on him and (I) led the team with “passion, openness, courage, and everything I could ever possibly give both on and off the field without ever compromising my principles and integrity.”
Thanking his mother, sister, and other family members, the Trinidadian said after many sacrifices a player would get a chance to play cricket and this cannot happen without family “who supported, encouraged and stood by me”.
According to ESPNCricinfo, Pollard is the only West Indies cricketer to have played 100 T20Is, and he struck the second-most sixes (234) for them in international cricket, after Chris Gayle’s 552.
His scorecard includes 123 ODIs from 2007 to 2022 where he scored 2706 runs at an average of 26.01. He registered three centuries and has 55 scalps. In 101 T20Is, he scored 1569 runs with a high score of 75 (not out). Surprisingly, he never played a Test cricket match for West Indies.
