IPL: 5 Players Who Played For Deccan Chargers And Then Never Returned

Deccan Chargers had quite a run in the IPL. They went from being wooden spooners in the first season to become champions in the 2nd season. Chargers excited and enthralled their fans in equal measure. The first season overseas signings for DC remain iconic even now. Andrew Symonds, Shahid Afridi, Adam Gilchrist, and Herschelle Gibbs formed their famed quartet. 5 Players who played for Deccan Chargers and then never returned to the IPL.

StumpsandBails looks at 5 of those players:

#5 Fidel Edwards

5 players who played for Deccan Chargers in IPL and then never returned. Fidel Edwards represented DC in 2009. He played 6 games for them and picked up 5 wickets. Edwards set the early pace for DC. DC won their first 4 games and the Caribbean player played a key role in those wins. But DC didn’t persist with him in the next season and none of the other franchises picked him.

#4 Chamara Silva

DC sure had a fetish for many Sri Lankan players. Silva represented Chargers in three matches scoring 40 runs at a strike rate of 153.85. He even bowled an over against the RCB. Unfortunately, he gave away 21 runs in a single over and that proved to be his last IPL outing.

#3 Nuwan Zoysa

Nuwan Zoysa and Chaminda Vaas were two key bowlers for Sri Lanka in the 2000s. He joined forces with Vaas in 2008 for the inaugural season. But Zoysa couldn’t really impress during his stay. He conceded 99 runs in 11 overs across 3 games. Zoysa was never picked again for DC. Post 2008, he never again played the IPL.

#2 Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi was a huge draw in the IPL. His iconic celebrations were a big part of DC’s forgettable first season. Afridi scored 81 runs at a strike rate of 176.09. He picked up 3-28 against RR. But owing to BCCI’s rule of not allowing Pakistan players to feature in the IPL, he could no longer continue his association with DC.

#1 Chaminda Vaas

Chaminda Vaas was one of modern cricket’s most skillful bowlers. He was equally adept both in the powerplay and at the death. Vaas represented DC in 13 games across 3 seasons (2008-10) and picked up 18 wickets. He was economical going in at just 7.55 runs per over. But post-2010 neither DC retained nor any other team showed interest in Vaas.
