Sophie Ecclestone news: Ecclestone, who is ranked No. 1 in the world in both the one-day and T20 formats, announced on Tuesday that she will play in the WBBL for the first time this summer for the Sydney Sixers.
Ecclestone has a strong track record in Australia, averaging 14 with the ball and bowling at less than six an over. Ecclestone is one of the most accurate and reliable spinners in all of cricket.
Prior to declining a contract offer from the Perth Scorchers because of the length of time she would have spent in biosecurity bubbles, she briefly considered playing in the WBBL in 2020.
Sophie Ecclestone recently stated in an interview that “It’s been a long time coming; I’ve wanted to go for several years. I’m overjoyed that it’s all worked out this year and that I can get over there. I’ve seen quite a bit of it. Several English girls have visited in the past and enjoyed the competition.
Sophie even said, “They play in my favourite colour, so that’s a great start. Obviously, they have great players in the form of Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, and Ash Gardner, so I’m really excited about going over and playing with them.
“Sophie is the world’s leading T20 bowler. Her record over the past few years speaks for itself, and we’re delighted to have her at the Sixers,” said England captain Charlotte Edwards, who will now coach the Sydney Sixers for the first time this season.”
She further added, saying, “She can bowl in all phases of the game; she has the ability to take wickets at crucial times, and she can minimize the run-scoring at all times. I know the WBBL is a competition Sophie wants to play in, and the fact she’s had lots of experience playing in Australia will hold her in good stead. ”
This will be a huge boost for the Sydney Sixers side as they managed to grab the number one bowler in the world, Sophie Ecclestone. We will have to wait and watch to see how this signing will turn out to be.
