Shubman Gill New Record
Team India’s new opener in the ODI format Shubman Gill has impressed everyone with his bat in the recently concluded ODI series against West Indies, which India won by 3-0 on Wednesday.
Gill, who missed his maiden ODI century by just 2 runs in the final match of the series has smashed 205 runs in total in 3 games and became the highest run-getter in the series.
Shubman Gill joins Sunil Gavaskar, and Sachin Tendulkar in interesting list
But his 98 not out put him in an interesting list of Indian players, who also remained unbeaten in their 90s. The list includes some of the big names of the Indian cricket like Sunil Gavaskar (92*), Sachin Tendulkar (96*), Virender Sehwag (99*), Kris Srikanth (93*), and Shikhar Dhawan (97*).
It was the rain who stopped Gill from completing his first ton. Although cricket is an unpredictable game, but the kind of batting he was doing in the match he should have scored a century.
Earlier, due to rain, the game was reduced to 40 overs, and when India were at 225 for 3 in 36 overs with Gill on 98*, rain started again and as per rules, umpires decided to play 36-over per side game.
The young Gill’s performance in the series sent a positive message to the selectors that team India is ready for a second team, if their main players busy with some other big fixtures or on rest.
As in this series, India’s regular captain Rohit Sharma was on rest due to workload management. And KL Rahul was also not there to open the innings, so India tried a new opening combination of Shikhar Dhawan-Shubman Gill, which satisfied the management with their performance in all 3 games by providing solid starts.
Apart from Rohit, the ex-skipper of India Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami also given rest for the ODI fixtures.
In the absence of Rohit Sharma, the management handled the captaincy responsibility to Shikhar Dhawan, and the Gabbar of team India did a perfect job as team India defeated the West Indies by 3-0 at their home.
India will now play a 5-match T20 series against West Indies, starting July 29. And for the shortest format, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya will be back, while Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah will remain on rest.
