Former England Test captain makes rare foray on to global T20 circuit
Joe Root Joins Dubai Capitals: Joe Root has agreed to represent Dubai Capitals in the International League T20 in January and February. The root will be making just his second appearance in an international T20 league. After being left out of the England ODI squad for South Africa on Thursday.
Although Joe Root, England’s top Test hitter, has not played for the T20I team since 2019, he has made no secret of his ambition to keep improving his game in the shortest format. He is on the list for Friday’s IPL auction and his affiliation with the Capitals. A franchise owned by the joint owners of Delhi Capitals, GMR Group, won’t hurt his chances of being selected.
Prior to the Test team’s tour of New Zealand in February, the root has been given some time off the international treadmill but still remains an important component of England’s ODI lineup.
Joe Root Joins Dubai Capitals for ILT20
He was unsold in 2018, but last month he confirmed his participation in the IPL auction. Root has had little T20 opportunities recently, in part due to the responsibilities of the Test captaincy he held from 2017 to 2022. He only played for Sydney Sixer in the BBL in 2018–19, in addition to sporadic appearances for Yorkshire and Trent Rockets in the Hundred.
After scoring an incredible 83 off 44 in a record run chase against South Africa during the group stage of the 2016 World T20 to help England advance to the final, Root lost out to Dawid Malan, who fills a similar anchor role in the top order. Prior to the 2019 50-over World Cup, he played his last T20I against Pakistan in Cardiff.
Dubai Capitals announced earlier this week that they had signed former India internationals. Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan, and the rest squad. Phil Simmons will be the coach, includes current players such as Rovman Powell. Fabian Allen and Sikandar Raza, as well as another Englishman in Dan Lawrence.
