Cricket in The Olympics: Cricket still has a chance to compete in the Olympics. After it appeared that there would be little prospect of the sport being included in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, it has been confirmed that LA28 has invited the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make a presentation.
Break dancing will be one of the eight other disciplines that cricket will compete against, according to information from all parties involved (World DanceSport Federation). The other federations invited are those for baseball/softball (WBSC), flag football (IFAF), lacrosse (World Lacrosse), karate (WKF), kickboxing (WAKO), squash (WSF), and racing (FIA).
According to Cricbuzz, nine disciplines are on the shortlist of international federations that have been asked to submit RFI (Request for Information) ideas for the LA28 Olympic sports program revision. Later this month, the presentations will need to be made. Prior to the IOC Session in Mumbai in the middle of 2023, the final decision is anticipated.
Although it is unknown how many of those invited will ultimately be represented at the Games, LA28 has already revealed 28 sports: swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, canoe, cycling, equestrian, fencing, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, rugby, sailing, shooting, skateboarding, soccer, sport climbing, surfing, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, triathlon, volleyball, and wrestling.
Over one billion fans, most of them young will be the focus of the IOC pitch on the game’s attractiveness on a worldwide scale. It would also demonstrate that the top players in the world would participate in the game’s most thrilling format (T20).
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice recently told the media when asked about the organization’s intentions for the Olympics, “We have made it clear that we want to take part in the Olympic Games. We are offering the LA28 organizers our assistance and the data they need to evaluate the potential inclusion of several sports on the Olympic schedule. At this point, the choices are due the next year. At this point, the only noteworthy information is that we are helping the LA28 organizers.”
