Happy Birthday VVS Laxman

Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman, born on November 1, 1974, is a former Indian international cricket player as well as a former cricket pundit and commentator. In Test cricket, Laxman, a right-handed batsman renowned for his graceful stroke play, batted in the middle of the order. Laxman is now the head coach of the India Under-19 and India A teams as well as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Laxman is the great-grandnephew of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President.

Today marks VVS Laxman’s 48th birthday. In 2012, Laxman declared his retirement from international cricket. His career included “134 Tests, 86 ODIs, and 11,119 international runs.”

Early Life

Laxman born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (present-day Telangana). The well-known Vijayawada doctors Dr Laxman’s parents are quite famous physicians Dr Shantaram and Dr Satyabhama of Vijayawada.

Laxman attended Little Flower High School in Hyderabad where he studied. Laxman selected cricket as a vocation even though he enrolled in a medical school for his undergraduate education. On February 16, 2004, he wed Guntur native and graduate of computer applications G. R. Shailaja. Sarvajit, a son, and Achinthya, a daughter, are their two children.

100 Plus Test Matches

Without ever participating in a One-Day Cricket World Cup, Laxman is one of the very few players who have played 100 Test matches. Laxman made up for his comparatively slow running between the wickets with his stroke play and quick scoring. He received one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year honours in 2002.

God of 4th Innings

Laxman played for Hyderabad in the domestic cricket leagues. He participated in county cricket for Lancashire as well. In the first season of the Indian Premier League, he also served as captain of the Deccan Chargers team. Later, he was a part of the Kochi Tuskers squad. He served as the Sunrisers Hyderabad team’s coach till 2021. Because of his achievements at position No. 4, he is known as the “God of 4th Innings.”

His Best Innings

In both Tests and One Day Internationals against Australia, Laxman was quite productive. Four of his six ODI hundreds and six of his 17 Test hundreds both came against Australia.  In two Test matches against Australia, he has two double centuries: his career high of 281 at Kolkata in 2000-01 and 200 not out at Feroz Shah Kotla in 2008–09.  After the game, the Australians acknowledged they had no idea where to bowl to him.

Awards

  1. Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour given in India in 2011.
  2. The Arjuna Award, given for his exceptional performance in sports in 2001.
  3. Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2002.
  4. On February 4, 2015, Teri University in New Delhi awarded an honorary Doctorate on Laxman.
