Out of form, Mominul Haque has announced his decision of stepping down as Bangladesh Test Captain due to a run drought. Here in this article, we talk about Mominul Haque steps down as Bangladesh Test Captain.
In 2019, Haque was appointed as the full-time captain of Bangladesh and during his captaincy tenure team, Bangladesh was only able to win 3 test matches out of 16.
The biggest achievement he recorded as a captain of Bangladesh was the test win against New Zealand in New Zealand. They defeated mighty New Zealand in the first test match by 8 wickets in January 2022.
However, the decision of stepping down as captain came due to Haque wanting to concentrate on his batting. He made the announcement during a meeting with BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) at the home of BCB’s president Nazmul Hasan.
“I just told them I am unable to contribute to the side as a captain and failed to motivate the team. So I feel it is better if someone else is given the responsibility,” Mominul told reporters after the meeting.
“I feel that if I can concentrate on my batting it will be good for me as well as for the team.”
He was under the radar of criticism because of the test series lost to Sri Lanka in May 2022. And people were demanding his resignation ahead of the upcoming big series against West Indies.
The 30-year-old has been struggling very badly with his form as in the last six innings he only managed to score just 162 runs, including only one half-century.
Haque has a fantastic record as a Test batsman as he recorded 3525 runs in 53 matches he played for Bangladesh. Till now he has smashed 11 hundred and 15 half-centuries.
BCB handed made him the captain in October 2019 when ICC (International Cricket Board) banned the then captain of Bangladesh Shakib AL Hasan for his failure to report corrupt approaches.
The board is yet to announce the upcoming captain, but as per media reports, Shakib AL Hasan will be re-appointed as Test Captain.
Bangladesh will leave for West Indies on June 5 to play the 2-Test match series. They will also play 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs during the tour.
