Will MS Dhoni play as an impact player in IPL 2025?

MS Dhoni, one of the most celebrated cricketers in the history of cricket, is set to feature in yet another season of Indian Premier League (IPL), despite leaving the international cricket for over five years. So let’s take a look at Will MS Dhoni play as an impact player in IPL 2025.

Under IPL governing council’s new guidelines, a player can be retained as an uncapped player if he has not played any international cricket in the last five years and has not had a BCCI central contract in the last 5 years. CSK used this option and retained their talisman for 4 crores as one of their five retentions ahead of mega auction.

The move raised many eyebrows and sparked speculation over whether MS Dhoni merely feature as an impact player in the upcoming season of IPL due to age factor and lack of participation in cricket though the year?

Dhoni to play as an impact player in IPL 2025?

Highly unlikely, owing primarily to his wicketkeeping skills and ability to guide the skipper on the field. His presence will add extra strength to the side. However, as he is not active in competitive cricket and only plays IPL once a year, whether or not the 43-year-old MS Dhoni will play as an impact player or not will depend on his fitness at the time of any specific game.

Despite dealing with a muscle tear, he played the entire IPL 2024 as wicketkeeper batter and a permanent member of the playing 11. His drive and dedication towards the sport is unparalleled, and it is very likely that MS Dhoni will play IPL 2025 as a permanent member of the main eleven and not as an impact player.

Dhoni’s performance in IPL

MS Dhoni has seen everything from being the costliest player in IPL 2008, the league’s inaugural year, to being prepared to play as an uncapped player in IPL 2025.

Leading CSK (Chennai Super Kings) to five IPL titles, joint-most in the league, and the only captain to win two consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011, Dhoni remained the backbone of the Chennai Super Kings.

Despite batting at middle or lower down the order, Dhoni is still the sixth highest run-getter with over 5200 runs in 264 games and is the only wicketkeeper batter in the history of IPL to cross 5000-run mark.

His shot hitting abilities and the way he smashes long sixes have long been admired, and the fans will once again come in huge numbers to support and cheer for the game’s undisputed legend.
