Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer: Reasons for Non-Selection in T20I Series vs Bangladesh

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad, a skilled batsman and the captain of India C in the Duleep Trophy, last represented India in a T20 match against Zimbabwe. This talented Maharashtra batsman not only led India to a gold medal in the Asian Games but also holds the 9th position in the ICC Men’s T20 batting rankings due to his exceptional skills.

Despite his remarkable performance, he has not been a regular member of the Indian T20 team. Surprisingly, he was excluded from the Indian T20 squad that toured Sri Lanka, with the reason cited as the presence of established top-order players like Yashasvi Jaiswal. Additionally, despite the absence of regular members, Ruturaj Gaikwad has not been selected for the upcoming T20 matches against Bangladesh.

Based on reports and rumors, it is suggested that the management may have a specific reason for wanting him to participate in more red-ball cricket. There is a possibility that he might join the Indian squad for the upcoming tours to Australia or South Africa.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer, a versatile cricketer, has showcased his skills in all formats of the game while representing the Indian cricket team. The right-handed batsman made an impressive debut by scoring a century in his first match. He also demonstrated his leadership abilities by captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, where he led the team to victory. Furthermore, he earned a spot in the Indian cricket squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and delivered a noteworthy performance by scoring a century.

Despite his on-field accomplishments, Iyer encountered challenges off the field. He was removed from the BCCI’s central contract due to his absence from domestic cricket earlier in the year. Recently, he had the opportunity to captain the India D team in the Duleep Trophy, showcasing his leadership qualities once again.

In T20 matches for India, Iyer has played 57 matches. However, despite his contribution, he was excluded from the Indian T20 squad for the Bangladesh series.

Speculations suggest that his exclusion could be attributed to intense competition among players and a recent dip in form. Additionally, the middle-order positions, where Iyer typically bats, are already occupied by strong players such as Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Shivam Dube, which may have influenced the selection decision.
