Jasprit Bumrah vs Rohit Sharma Test Captaincy Debate Who should Lead the Team?

The first test of the BGT 2024-25 will surely go down in history as one of the most famous test victories of team India, it isn’t a common achievement to beat the Australian side in Perth. What made it an immense achievement is that they won by a massive margin of 295 runs, inside four days, that too without their regular captain Rohit Sharma and on the back of a demoralizing 0-3 defeat at home to New Zealand in the earlier test series. Jaspirt Bumrah delivered an immense performance, not just as a bowler but also because of how he managed his team when they were on the verge of derailing from the win in the first innings of the test. We look at Jasprit Bumrah vs Rohit Sharma Test Captaincy debate.

Should Jasprit Bumrah replace Rohit Sharma as captain for the test matches?

Bumrah’s Leadership and Bowling

Jasprit Bumrah was an extraordinary force both as a bowler and captain. He made sure no Australian batter remained settled on the pitch, his captaincy was strategic by making sharp bowling changes and collaborating with experienced players such as Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul he had overturned the team spirit from a destructive opening innings into a strong strategic second innings.

Bumrah brought out the best from debutants Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, who adapted well to the pressure of playing Test cricket in Australia. Despite a relatively inexperienced lineup, India triumphed in Perth, a venue Australia had previously won four times.

Rohit’s Captaincy Challenges

Sunil Gavaskar had recently praised Jasprit Bumrah’s leadership, pointing out that the misconception that fast bowlers can’t captain teams should be expelled. Gavaskar emphasized Bumrah’s strategic thinking, particularly his effective bowling changes during matches. However, the focus shifted to Rohit Sharma’s leadership struggles in red-ball cricket.

Despite being an exceptional leader in white-ball formats, Rohit’s captaincy faced challenges in the recent Test series against New Zealand, where India suffered a 3-0 whitewash. The series highlighted his difficulties in adapting to the demands of Test cricket, raising questions about his ability to lead in longer formats. Bumrah himself has said in a recent interview that he is ready to move aside for Rohit Sharma for the Adelaide Test. However, when the time does come for Rohit to move away, we know that the pacer will be prepared to take the captain’s armband.
