Consecutive Series Losses Mount Pressure

Now, trailing 2-1 in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, a loss in the fifth Test would mark a third straight series defeat. 

Former England captain Mike Atherton, speaking on Sky Sports, highlighted the mounting pressure on Gambhir, stating, “India, with their resources and population strength, are expected to win every time. Three Test series defeats in a row would be a problem for him.” Despite Gambhir’s success in guiding India to the 2025 Champions Trophy title, the Test team’s struggles have cast a shadow over his leadership.

Team Management Dismisses Pressure Claims

India’s captain Shubman Gill and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak have downplayed suggestions that Gambhir is feeling the heat. Addressing an altercation with the pitch curator at the Oval, Gill clarified it stemmed from the team’s inability to inspect the pitch closely, not pressure. Kotaksaid the same, stating, “I haven’t seen Gautam Gambhir under pressure from his playing days till now.” 

He emphasized the competitiveness of the ongoing series, noting that the matches have been closely contested, with several extending to the fifth day. As India face a critical Test, Gambhir’s resilience and leadership will be under the spotlight.
