Babar Azam, widely regarded as one of the finest batsmen in modern cricket, has faced his fair share of challenges in Test cricket. While his talent and technique are undeniable, his journey in the longest format has not always been smooth sailing. Let’s look at Babar Azam performance in Test cricket.

In the early stages of his Test career, Babar often found it difficult to convert promising starts into significant scores. Despite showcasing his elegance and ability to play long innings in domestic cricket, replicating the same consistency at the international level was a daunting task.

His strike rate and approach to batting in swinging conditions also came under scrutiny, particularly during overseas tours in Australia and South Africa, where seam and swing posed tough challenges.

The same incident happened in the ongoing first Test between Pakistan and South Africa at Centurion, where Babar was not sure to leave or play the swinging outside off stump delivery and got out for 4.

Babar Azam performance in Test cricket

After failing to start his Test career on high note, with averages of 32.33 in 2016 and 16.72 in 2017, Babar enjoyed a dominating time during 2018 to 2022, scoring runs at an average of over 56, expect in 2021, while 69.64 after 17 innings in 2022 was remained his highest till date in a year in the longest format.

2023 turned out to be one of the worst years for the right-handed batter, with his average dropping to 22.66 and even worsening further in 2024 to 16.88.

Another area where Babar struggled especially in the last was his performance under high-pressure situations. As a middle-order batsman, much was expected of him to stabilize the innings after early wickets, but there were times when he failed to deliver.

These struggles became more apparent when Pakistan’s batting lineup crumbled around him, leaving him with the burden of carrying the team’s hopes single-handedly.

Despite these hurdles, Babar’s determination and work ethic have helped him evolve. While he still has areas to improve, including converting starts into big scores more consistently, his teammates and supporters want him to regain form as early as possible.
