Australia continued to demonstrate their bowling prowess throughout the match, with impressive performances from a formidable attack featuring Scott Boland, team captain Pat Cummins, and fast bowler Mitchell Starc.
The Indian batting lineup struggled to cope with the pressure exerted by the Australian bowlers, continuing a trend observed throughout the series. Ten Indian batters failed to score more than 26 runs, with four players dismissed for single-digit scores. Despite these challenges, Rishabh Pant stood out in the middle order, providing some resistance with a crucial knock of 40 runs. However, India could only muster a total of 185 runs in 72.2 overs, which was far from competitive.
In a display of resilience, Indian bowlers showcased their capabilities, limiting Australia to just 181 runs in their first innings. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were particularly effective, each claiming three wickets. Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with two wickets apiece. Although Beau Webster managed to score a commendable 57 runs, his efforts were not enough to propel Australia to a significant lead.
With a slender first-innings lead of just four runs, India’s batting lineup entered their second innings with the aim of seizing the match. Unfortunately, they faltered once again, losing wickets. Rishabh Pant displayed his trademark aggression, scoring a blistering 61 runs off just 33 balls, while Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed 22 crucial runs. Unfortunately, the rest of the batting order collapsed, with no other players reaching decent figures.
The Australian bowling attack, spearheaded by Scott Boland, who delivered an impressive performance and claimed six wickets, proved too much for India. Captain Pat Cummins added three more wickets to his tally while Webster took one.
Following a modest target of 162 runs, Indian bowlers fought bravely to defend a challenging total, but the Australian batting lineup proved too strong. They managed to claim four wickets but could not effectively contain the runs.
Usman Khawaja’s steady 41 runs, alongside significant contributions from Travis Head (38 runs) and Beau Webster (31 runs), guided Australia home to victory. This win not only secured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but also highlighted Australia’s determination and skill, lifting the trophy by six wickets and marking a triumphant return after ten long years.
