The former vice-captain of England, Ben Stokes, made an unbeaten 84 to chase the score of 242 against New Zealand. Moreover, Martin Guptill’s throw in the last over of the world cup, hit Stokes bat and diverted towards the boundary and went for a four. As per the rules of cricket, batsmen do not run for overthrows when ball get deflected of their bat. After the overthrow, the England all-rounder had his arms up in the air, indicating that he had nothing to do and also apologize to the New Zealand team.
“I said to Kane I’ll be apologizing for that for the rest of my life. It was not the way I wanted to do it.. the ball going off my bat like that… I apologized to Kane,” – Ben Stokes said.
Ben Stokes was named as man-of-the-match after England won the world cup despite tied final and tied super over. However, England had finally lifted the world cup trophy for having more boundaries.
“All the hard words that have gone in over these four years, this is where we aspired to be. To do it with such a game, I don’t think there will be another like this in the history of cricket,” – Ben Stokes added.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson what happened was unfortunate but accepted his fate after England lifted the World Cup for the first time.
“That was a bit of a shame, wasn’t it? You just hope it doesn’t happen in moments like that. You can nitpick, but perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be for us. It is perhaps tough to review the match and such small margins,” – Kane Williamson said.
England has reached the final World Cup after they reached for the 4th time after losing against West Indies, Australia, and Pakistan previously.
