Shakib Al Hasan loses temper, charges at umpire over wide ball decision

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of the Bangladesh team in ODIs and Tests, lost his composure during the third match of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) between Fortune Barishal and Khulna Tigers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

Rejaur Rahman Raja, the player of the match against the Chattogram Challengers, bowled a slower ball in the 16th over that caused controversy when the umpire neglected to indicate a wide off him.

Raja delivered a slower bouncer, and Shakib immediately thought the ball had passed over his head. The umpire, however, disagreed and ruled that it was a valid delivery.

Shakib, who was born in Magura, then charged at the umpire violently and displayed displeasure. He shouted at the umpire and got into an altercation. Finally, it took opposition skipper Mushfiqur Rahim to step in and bring order to the situation.

Shakib wasn’t finished, and the very next ball Raja was hit for a huge six over midwicket. Shakib soon reached his half-century off 26 balls. He struck Thisara Perera for 18 runs off four balls in the following over after throwing everything he had at him.

Shakib Al Hasan, a seasoned all-rounder for Bangladesh, has a reputation for lashing out on the field, particularly at umpires. He has frequently been observed losing his composure during cricket matches, more so in the domestic stage. The same thing occurred again when the Bangladeshi star yelled at the leg-umpire for calling over a wide ball. Shakib was seen screaming at the umpire when the verdict did not go in his favour. As a result, the footage of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Shakib Al Hasan’s previous angry incident

In a well-known incident from the Dhaka Premier League in 2021, Shakib became so enraged at an umpire’s ruling that he uprooted the stumps and smashed them on the ground. Shakib thought better of it, though, and chose to apologise.

“I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone. And especially those who are watching from home. An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens unfortunately,” Shakib had said back then.

More recently, Shakib used the Bollywood film “Nayak” as an example to demonstrate how quickly he could solve the problems in BPL.

“If they made me the BPL CEO, it would take me one or two months to correct everything. You have seen the movie Nayak right? If you want to do something, you can do it in one day,” Shakib had said in a press conference.

Shakib ultimately scored 67 runs off 32 balls, including seven fours and four sixes. He later removed by the dependable Mashrafe Mortaza on the first delivery of the 20th over.
