The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given a clarification about the WTC points and they have been fined with 8 points instead of 5 because they were eight overs short of the mark at the end of the 1st Test.

ICC has given a press note stating – “As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, up to a maximum fine of 100 percent of the match fee,”

“England were eight overs short (not five overs short as previously announced) but were only fined 100 percent of their match fee due to the limit. However, the points deduction for penalty overs is not capped and must reflect the actual number of penalty overs a team is short of the minimum requirement as per Clause 16.1.2 of the ICC Playing Conditions, hence they have been penalized one point for each over they were short.” – ICC said.

Coming to the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 points table, England has accumulated ten penalty overs and as a result, they have lost ten points. And after the deduction, they are at the 7th position of the points table with a win percentage of 10. England has lost three matches, one drawn and one win so far in the WTC race.

Fun Fact: In ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 Cycle, Each team is awarded 12 points for a win, four for a draw, six in case of a tie, and no points are given after a loss.
