On Thursday (09-07-2020), the government board gives confirmation that the 2020 edition of the Asia Cup got canceled. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is searching for a window in 2021 June to organize the Asia Cup tournament.

The Asia Cup tournament was to be scheduled to play in the month of September in Sri Lanka after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) offered the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) to swap the hosting rights for the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. The Asia Cup was to feature the teams of four subcontinents along with Asian qualifiers and with Afghanistan.

ACC has given the statement “The country-wise quarantine needs, restrictions on travel, fundamental health risks as well as social distancing permissions have posed as substantial difficulties in holding the tournament. All of the above, the risks about the health and safety of participants of cricketers, commercial partners, and support staff, audiences, and the whole cricket community were deemed to be very much significant.”

On Wednesday (08-07-2020), Sourav Ganguly, the president of BCCI had confirmed unofficially the cancellation of the tournament during an Instagram Live with a famous news channel of India.

According to the original calendar of ICC, the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament was to be hosted in the October-November window in Australia. However, the ICC continues to remain silent about the probability of hosting the event this year in 2020. Very soon, a declaration is expected.

With the postponement of this year’s Asia Cup, Sri Lanka is all set to organize the Asia Cup in the year 2021, whereas Pakistan has been awarded to host the Asia Cup in the year 2022. The previous edition, 2018 Asia Cup was hosted by the Indian Cricket Board, BCCI in 2018 September in UAE, in which India won the title.
