Australia captain Tim Paine expects Usman Khawaja to be fully fit and be available for the first Ashes test against England, which will take-off from August 1.
The left-handed batsman Khawaja had a hamstring injury during the match against South Africa in the recent World Cup and was ruled out of the tournament. He will not be available for the warm-up Test on Tuesday.
“I don’t think he’s in serious doubt. He’s in a rehab stage so the decision has been made that he won’t play at this stage. There is a possibility, maybe, if something were to happen to someone else he might be right for the back end of the game. But we expect him to be fully fit and available for selection for the first Test,” – Paine said.
Khawaja has been batting at No.3 since the last Ashes Series in England four years ago. He made a total of eight centuries and an average of 47.76 in this Series.
Tim Paine will lead the Hick Xll while Travis Head will lead Haddin XII as the captains for the Australian showdown starting from Tuesday.
