6 Historic Indian Cricket Victories

The Indian cricket team is the group that plays under maximum scrutiny and pressure. Over the years, the Indian cricket team has established itself as a major cricketing power in the world.

#1 1983 Cricket World Cup

The odds were stacked 1-66 against India when they faced two-time World Cup champions, West Indies in the final of the 1983 prudential World Cup. India were bowled out for 183 and everybody expected the West Indies to roll over the Indians soon. But Kapil’s devils as they were popularly called, fought tooth and nail to emerge champions. World cricket saw a new champion. India had arrived at the world stage defying all odds.

#2 2001 Kolkata Test

Steve Waugh’s Australia was on an all-conquering spree. Coming into the Kolkata Test match, Australia had defeated India under 3 days in Mumbai and had extended their winning streak to 16 Test matches. India were shambolic in their first innings and were asked to follow-on by Steve Waugh. But nobody knew what was to transpire. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid forged a match-winning 376 runs partnership to help India post a sizeable total of 357. Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar shared the wickets between them in the 4th innings as India won an iconic Test match. Indian Test cricket was never the same!

#3 2007 T20 World Cup Win

India were a bunch of no-hopers when they walked into the inaugural T20 World Cup. They had an experience of a solitary game and were led by a young captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But Dhoni and his boys stunned the entire world by emerging inaugural champions. This win gave birth to the razzmatazz called the IPL.

#4 2007 Perth Test

Perth was known as Australia’s bastion. It was considered to be the fastest wicket in the world. India were reeling from the poorly officiated Sydney Test which wasn’t played in the right spirit by one team according to Indian captain, Anil Kumble. Australia tried to intimidate India with a 4 pronged pace attack. But the move backfired badly for Australia as India notched a comfortable 72 run victory against the hosts.

#5 2011 ODI World Cup Win

India became world champions in 20111 after 28 years in the 50-over ODI format. Dhoni masterminded the championship campaign amidst zillions of expectations. India were in a spot of bother in the finals but in walked the captain, Dhoni, and changed the fate of the game. 2nd April 2011 is a day that is still fresh in the minds of billions of Indians.

#6 2021 Brisbane Test

Australia were expected to win 4-0 against India as the team lacked many of its frontline players. India were without 9 of their major players but they never gave up. Every time they were pushed to a corner, India came roaring back. India breached fortress Gabba, Brisbane to win the series 2-1. India were the first team after West Indies in 1988 to win a game at Gabba, Brisbane.
