Financial Losses Loom Large To Cricket Boards And BCCI

BCCI Undertaking Measures To Cut Expenses:

BCCI and other cricket boards are set to suffer huge losses if their high-profile tournaments gets cancelled over coronavirus induced health crisis.

BCCI is already taking austerity measures, as it has announced only the chief among the selection panel would travel in business class.

It has also said that the prize money of the winner in this year’s IPL has been cut to half. These are few examples that depict the tough times the board might be in, in the future marked by coronavirus outbreak.

BCCI decided to postpone its cash-rich IPL tournament from March 29th to April 25th due to coronavirus fears. There are big doubts if the tournament will happen at least from the new date.

Many experts believe that a IPL without foreign players at the later part of the year seems to be a more likely prospect.

If the series gets cancelled or shortened the board might incur significant losses to its 40 crore rupees it receives from Star Sports and sponsors.

A condensed tournament also means reduced revenue and not to mention losses resulted by  sale of less number of gate tickets.

ICC Planning To Hold Men’s T20 World Cup As Per Schedule:

Though the Women’s T20 world cup escaped narrowly from the impact of the coronavirus outbreak the happening of the men’s event which is scheduled to commence from October 18th this year, and takes place for nearly one month until November 15th might fall in danger.

The ICC until now has maintained that it is planning to hold the tournament as per the schedule and is monitoring the developments.

Another major tournament which is facing uncertainty due to the deadly virus is India tour to Australia at the end of the year. If the tour gets disrupted Cricket Australia might lose around US $ 174 millions.

In the same way in England, the state of inaugural ‘The Hundred’ championship is also hanging in balance in the light of coronavirus threat.
